The Pro-Series for Epilog machines that is equipped with the four inch lens is typically used to achieve a longer vertical cut. And, for cutting thicker materials. However, this comes at a price--that being slower cutting speed caused by the larger size of the laser beam. Therefore, we find that customers using this lens will have higher laser powers such as 60 or more watts. However, the higher laser power is not needed for some applications, such as cutting thick foam (not a very dense material).
The Pro-series includes 3 nozzle tips, with different diameter holes to provide flexibility for cut depth penetration and quality. These color coded tips are easily screwed on and off for different material laser cutting needs.

The authors say, "In the nozzle employed for cutting plastics, the gas jet orifice has a 0.8 mm diameter. Its function is to discharge gas coaxially to the laser beam. The extremely small size of the orifice ensures a thin, punctiform and efficacious jet of gas that makes it possible to obtain the narrowest possible kerf width and, simultaneously, high operating speed thanks to the rapid removal of the molten material. The nozzle–sample distance was fixed at 1 mm, because at this distance it is possible to obtain an optimum gas jet convergence and pressure in the cutting channel."
Impractical for smaller machine laser engraving and cutting, however, the physics of laser cutting flow dynamics can be carried over from metals to plastics. With the Pro-Series attachment, the nozzle can be removed for engraving, in order to use the autofocus. However, with the cutting, the nozzle is typically set very close to the height of the autofocus, so it is not advised to use autofocus for cutting jobs.
