The Pro-series for Epilog machines that is equipped wiht the 2 1/2" focal length lens is a good, multi-purpose engraving and cutting lens. It provides good quality engraving over very large areas, with minimal change in engraving dot sizes. In other words, the variation in height fluctuations of materials and the machine's table, over larger areas is offset by using this lens. The same is true for cutting as well. And, certainly it can be used for any size job whether small or large.
Pro-series includes 3 nozzle tips, with different diameter holes to provide flexibility for cut depth penetration and quality. The authors say, "In the nozzle employed for cutting plastics, the gas jet orifice has a 0.8 mm diameter. Its function is to discharge gas coaxially to the laser beam. The extremely small size of the orifice ensures a thin, punctiform and efficacious jet of gas that makes it possible to obtain the narrowest possible kerf width and, simultaneously, high operating speed thanks to the rapid removal of the molten material. The nozzle–sample distance was fixed at 1 mm, because at this distance it is possible to obtain an optimum gas jet convergence and pressure in the cutting channel."
Impractical for smaller machine laser engraving and cutting, however, the physics of laser cutting flow dynamics can be carried over from metals to plastics. With the Pro-Series attachment, the nozzle can be removed for engraving, in order to use the autofocus. However, with the cutting, the nozzle is typically set very close to the height of the autofocus, so it is not advised to use autofocus for cutting jobs.
Bell Laser offers 1.5 inch, 2 inch, and 4 inch focal length lenses with nozzle attachments. They can be purchased individually or as a combination purchase for all sizes.
